Altered Book lesson 5(pt1)

The hardest thing about doing the lovely ~Elizabeths Altered Book Course~ is wating for the next lesson hahaha!!!  Thats probably because I have collected all the pics & ephemera for my Mums book now.  For this lesson we looked at design principles.  I have to say that I found it quite hard to think about the different elements involved as I tend to go by eye in my crafting (& not think too much) so don't know if I have got this right.  Here is the page in my book...sorry its a bit squiffy!

I love this photograph of my Mum with her favourite sister Mary. Aunty Mary was a girly girl, don't you just love her dress? I love the way they are holding hands :-D

The elements we were asked to consider I have tried to get all on one page to save pages in my book.

Harmony...I went for 1950's type of theme this time using colour, roses, the photo and the old chiffon trimming sewed down the edges.
Unity... this is reflected in the rows of roses cut from paper napkins
Balance...I tried to balance the photo with a grey-stamped rose opposite.  There is also symmetry with the borders.
Emphasis...definitely on the photo of my Mum with her younger sister.
Proportion...think I failed this one, comparing the roses to the photo hahaha!

If you are wondering why there are sort-of-blank areas in my pages...I intend to write in it at a later date.

Thank you so much for popping by today, HUGS xxx

It's a beautiful page Karen and I think you've got everything covered. Mind you, who needs rules? Sometimes I think the best pages are those that just happen and you 'feel' what should be there.
Fab napkin roses, she's going to love this xxx

I can only say 'oh wow'!! This really is a gorgeous page spread. I love those roses in particular along with the green chiffon (must be the textile teacher in me!). Loving Auntie Mary's dress too! Just fab Karen.

I think you did an excellent job with these principles. Those of us with no art training often rely on our intuity to create journal pages. However, IF you know the principles (and elements, which will come next lesson), you will be far more pleased with each spread that you create. I sometimes forget to apply them to my spreads, so I'm glad you were able to identify what you were working on.

The large single heart is proportional to the many smaller and smaller hearts. Thought you might like my take on proportion (grin).

Love your 1950's theme page, it's beautiful! As far as proportion goes, can't showing out of proprtion be equally as important as being in proprtion, plus Elizabeth says we can break rules anyway! lol But I truly love your pages! waving hi from the hills of North Carolina :)

Karen, the roses are just beautiful and set the pages off so well. Love your choice of colour and the chiffon edge is lovely. What a wonderful memory book you are creating. BJ

I DO like your spread, Karen. I also like how you listed and pointed each element out on your page. The rose edges are so nice and the frilly green adds to the feminine aspect of the pages. Writing in it will be a treat.

Karen, you have created another lovely page and were so clever to combine all the elements into one spread--I think that is far harder or requires much more thought than what I did which was simply 5 different pages. The pink roses with these leaves are complemented so nicely by the edge trims!

What a delightful, charming page. It's such a great way to remember your mom. You did a great job of trying to cover all the bases on one page - I too usually just go by my "eye" without analyzing why. When you stop to think about the why, it's nice to realize you know what to look for! Visiting from Elizabeth's.

Karen, thank you! I think I've got the idea now.... have been trying to over-think this lesson. hope you don't mind but I've printed off this page to take home and remind me what I need to remember when I do my homework. Obviously I'll use my own theme.
this page is absolutely beautiful, and you got the feel of the 50's (not that I was there of course, except right at the end as a wee baby!) Helen.
